Thanks a lot - have to try that skin-making it, too. Since Gimp (like PS) was and is a horror to me, I'll try that "paint.net"-tool. It has all the plug-ins available and sufficient tools to open the files, deal with layers, do little paint jobs like changing numbers etc ... hopefully it's able to save it, too.

Eskimo-Baby or whoever might have them - can you please point me to the font or a template for the numbers you (or 216th) used for the personal skins? I mess around with the skins, too, so we have them unified at least within the squadron.

Nice, thank you. That thread I found already, since the Russians had no fixed number schema, we're free to use a nice font. I think it'll be best to create one common (hidden) 4k-216th-specific layer (numbers, symbols, icons, stars etc) one can add to any IL2-BoX-template. I'd gladly gather that stuff if you drop it here.

After some hard fights with nerd-build-software, alpha-layers and grey-scales I finally was able get some results: from behind But I'm not glad with that template or I don't understand some important details. If you look at the large, white rivets and much to coarse "worn-out" propellerblades (above) you know what I mean:

I see you have some really nice ideas!Unfortunately I am also no checker with the templates. In most cases I go to the "User paint in here"section and add new markings or camos as new layers.I change the weathering degree by using the layers transparancy and I pay a lot of attention not to move the layers of the original template, that always ends up in a total mess.

... and I pay a lot of attention not to move the layers of the original template ... GOOD hint, I'll try my procedure with the original template! Maybe I accidentally moved layer(s) a few pixel and that's it! More and more I see the concept behind those templates, but one needs to do it very organized. Artists with discipline, rare species.

I use Gimp2 for skins, and hopefully it is the same regarding layers, but what I found useful was to copy all the layers and then deactivate the originals which I would drag into one 'folder' on the side.
Then I would work with the copies, if I mess anything up I could just go back to the original of that layer, make a new copy and start again. (I would also often accidentally nudge a layer and it was difficult to realign).
The other thing with me making copies is I found I could sometimes merge some of them together which would tidy up the list, e.g. something like 'oil smears' and 'heavy engine exhaust' I would merge into one and call 'dirt'. I could then use it as one layer or of course make my own new layer if I wanted and just discard it.
I do wish the developers could release both weathered and un-weathered templates for the aircraft. It is so much work to try and do your own custom weathering when you have to sort out the alpha layer to match (i.e. build a new one from scratch, especially for the composite constructed aircraft).
I generally find the default VVS skins quite nice though, I like the plain, or stock camo we are given, it is just icons and numbers that need adding generally, like Eskimo has done at the start of the thread, looks nice. (apologies if you added that camo yourself!)
(From a skinning perspective it is much more fun in my opinion to make all those glamour-boy 109 skins.)
